Photos of Fukushima 10 Years After the Nuclear Disaster
Exactly 10 years ago, the world was in shock as headlines continued coming out of Fukushima, Japan. A 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck the coast of Japan and caused a tsunami that ravaged the city of Fukushima. The tsunami caused the local power plant to shut down, and three nuclear reactors melted down and leaked lethal amounts of radiation. People within a 50 kilometre radius of Fukushima were forced to evacuate immediately, with no chance to pack up. The result was an empty city and neighboring towns with half-eaten meals left on dining tables and cars abandoned on roads.
Over the past 10 years, the city of Fukushima has been reclaimed by nature and wildlife, with few human visitors (as the radiation levels have been too high). Now, some small towns on the very edges of the exclusion zone are allowing residents to return. However, it will be a long time (perhaps never) that residents will be able to return to the site of the nuclear power plant.
